At approximately 0123 hours the ETFD (Co. 25) along with Mt. Penn (1) and Birdsboro-Union (7) were dispatched to St. Lawrence Borough in the area of St. Lawrence Avenue and Levan St. for a reported Brush Fire on the mountain. Deputy 25 (E. Lessig) requested Lower Alsace (4) to assist. Upon response Brush 25 and Engine 25 crews witnessed visible flames from the mountain. Crews tried to access the fire from multiple locations until it was determine the only access would be from Dautrich Rd. Access was limited to a dirt path which was extremely rocky in some spots. Crews worked at the fire and contained it to roughly an acre of land and initially cleared at 0500hours. Due to the severe heat the likely hood of a rekindle was possible so crews agreed to return at 0800 to check on the area and make sure there were no rekindles. Upon arriving crew witnessed some rekindles and stretched forestry hose in order to extinguish the fires. The initial investigation indicates that fireworks being set off may have caused the fire. At approximately 1200hours crews requested the assistance of Western Berks Fire (18) and Strausstown Fire (50) to respond and take over mop up operations. Also assisting were Oley Fire Company Ambulance. A special thanks to those crews that assisted and we look forward to working with you again!
